Special Announcements
Southeastern Children’s Home was started over thirty years ago by a group of Christians to provide a place
of hope for needy and abused children. The first child care residence was located in Sumter, SC. It has
grown over the years and offers a comprehensive scope of services including residential cottages for girls
and for boys located on the 50 acre campus in Duncan, a preparation for independent living home in Lyman,
a supervised independent living house on the Duncan campus for 18-21 year old females, a licensed foster
care program, an adoption program, and maternity services program. Marriage and family counseling is
also available. Residential Placement Services Placement is offered for adolescent males and females ages
12 to 21 in two group homes located on the Duncan campus. These young people are generally in need of
therapeutic intervention outside their families to help them make more responsible decisions in life.
Preparation for Independent Living Cottage This is a residential program for 4 females 16-18 years old, who
need help in transitioning into the community, where they can become both independent and productive.
Emphasis is placed on developing skills needed to be successful when they launch from Southeastern
Children’s Home to independence. Supervised Independent Living Cottage This program has the capacity
to serve females 18-21 who have graduated from our residential program, but still need to practice
independent living skills in a protected environment. Four young adult women may live together in a small
house located on our Duncan campus while they further their educations, work, and learn to manage
money. They meet weekly with an assigned social worker to work on a plan for their lives past age 21.
Foster Care Children are placed in specially recruited and trained families who care for the children in their
own homes. These are boys and girls who need a minimum amount of therapeutic intervention and are
usually in placement for short periods of time. Adoption Placement This service, which is a real blessing to
families as well as to children, helps children of all ages find permanent families. Most of the adoptions
currently being done by Southeastern are done through networking with other agencies. In the future, we
hope to build the adoption program and be able to serve many more children. Educational Program Most of
the children referred to our residential programs have been in many placements and have experienced
many school disruptions. The majority of them come to SECH one to two years behind academically. The
board and staff at SECH are committed to helping them catch up academically as much as they can during
their stay with us. Our residents attend Spartanburg District V Public Schools, and we employ a certified
teacher, Lisa Smith, who works with each of the children in our after-school program, in a state of the art
classroom setting in the basement of the Family Services Center. Here our students are given
individualized attention and help on difficult assignments and projects, access to the computers and
internet for research, and a daily values training session.
