| Summer is now upon us! Can you believe that Sunday is June 1st? The school year will conclude this week, and our students are excited about the summer as well as moving up another grade level. Let’s have a great summer! Whew! These gas prices are killing me! What can we do? I thought about what I could do and came up with several practical suggestions. 1. Drive less. Instead of going out for a drive, how about going out for a walk! I plan on cutting down on my trips to Lowe’s and to “the mall” just to “window shop.” 2. Slow down. Everyone knows that driving slower saves energy. Slowing down, also, leads to less stress and fewer accidents. 3. Travel with friends. If possible, make travel plans with family and friends and share in the costs. Check with your friends or fellow employees to find out if they would consider carpooling. Christians should certainly consider riding to worship together, if possible. When you have the opportunity, ride in the church van with your fellow Christian brothers and sisters to various functions instead of taking your own vehicle. 4. Plan and prioritize your trips. If possible, wait until you have several errands to run; then map out the best possible route to take before you leave home. For example instead of making an extra trip to the grocery store, why not stop for groceries on your way home from worship? 5. Use today’s technology. Have your payroll check automatically deposited in your bank. Pay your bills online, or arrange for your bank to pay your bills from your account automatically. 6. Make sure your vehicle is in good running condition. Check the pressure in your tires. Clean oil and a clean oil filter as well as a clean air filter are very important to getting the optimum mileage per gallon of fuel. I realize that these elementary suggestions will not solve the world’s energy problems. We definitely need to find better alternatives for the use of gasoline. While those in authority work on the greater issues, we can make a few simple changes in our daily style of living that can positively impact our family budgets. Our Sunday morning sermon theme for the month of June is “Marriage and the Home – God’s Word – A Foundation against the Storms.” Jesus spoke of the storms of life in Matthew 7:24-27. He spoke of the rain, the floods, and the wind. For our consideration this month, I would like to look at these storms in the following context: 1. Rain – The Culture we live in 2. Floods – The Crises live through 3. Wind – The Changes we live with We all know just how important the home is to any society. It is my prayer and sincere desire for the church of Christ at St. Andrews Road that we possess, build, and maintain strong, stable homes for ourselves, for our children, and for future generations. On Sunday night we will look at “Bringing up Godly Children.” Our topics will include: Providence – Guidance – Balance – Patience. Please make plans to be here for every lesson. You will be so thankful that you were here to hear God’s word read and taught. Our Vacation Bible School is just around the corner, scheduled for Sunday night through Thursday night – July 20th -- 24th. We’re getting excited about the possibilities. Of course, we will need every member of the SAR congregation involved to make this year’s VBS the best yet. Don’t wait to be asked to help. When the opportunity arises, just say, “I want to help.” Sunday is always a very special day for every Christian. I look forward to being with you to worship the true and living God in spirit and in truth. |
