| GARDEN CITY CHURCH OF CHRIST Orangeburg, South Carolina The Garden City Church of Christ, under the leadership of Quillie Brooker, Jr., Henry Jenkins, Sr., and Harry Kempson, with their wives Myra Brooker, Sharon Jenkins, Louise Kempson, and Miriam Haynes, was established on September 30, 1984. We have continued these years by the help of God and many fine congregations, one of which is the Saint Andrews Road Church of Christ in Columbia, South Carolina. We have grown from a membership of seven to 59; however, we have baptized over a hundred people since 1984. The church in Orangeburg has had much success on the campus of South Carolina State University. It is safe to say that out of the one hundred plus baptisms, about half was college students. We now average from 5 to 15 students a week. What are we doing in Orangeburg today? After eight years we moved from a rented building to our own church building. This was done by the help of God and many fine congregations like Saint Andrews Road Church of Christ. The church here continues to keep God first in all things by preaching and teaching the whole counsel of God. This is done by going out into the community once a month door knocking. There is also a Bible Correspondence Course offered to our visitors. We continue to encourage one another to stay on the course. This is done in our Ladies’ Bible Class and our Men’s Training Class on second and fourth Sundays. We hope and trust that by doing our part the church will be around for many years. As we look ahead, our vision for the Lord’s Church in Orangeburg is spiritual strength and stability. We look forward to the day when the church here will be organized in the way God would have it organized with elders and deacons. This is our goal; and to accomplish it, the men must “study to present themselves approved unto God.” As we strive to do this, the church will be strong in the Lord. We will then be able to look out among ourselves and set over us men who are spiritually strong. At this time we are unable to set a time for this to be a reality. The couples are few, yet we look with great anticipation to that day when the church will be organized. It is also our desire to become self-supporting as soon as possible. As with the organization of the church, the need to become self-supporting has always been before the congregation. It is my belief that with these two things in place, the church in Orangeburg will be in a better position to move forward with greater spiritual strength and stability. Quillie Brooker Minister |
